Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to question particular decisions from the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
