An Kindness of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Obtain the Role That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my friend was considering starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and started talking to fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did for a living, and I told him that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but immediately told my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his identity, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in multiple respects. I would never have had the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university led me to a role in Europe where I got to know my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
